Captured Carbon Green Certificates

What is a Captured Carbon Green Certificate?
A Captured Carbon Green Certificate confirms that your electricity supplier has backed your energy consumption with certified renewable electricity.
Each certificate is issued following an independent verification process to ensure that the renewable claims made are supported by the appropriate Green Attributes which includes Guarantees of Origin (GOs) and Public Service Obligation (PSO) Attributes. PSO Attributes relate to renewable generation in government support schemes such as REFIT and RESS
You can be confident that the Renewable Source Electricity Certificate you received has been verified. The certificates, issued by Capture Carbon, confirm that the renewable electricity supply has been validated through the appropriate channels.
There are two options available to suppliers to be able to verify a green tariff:
Have 100% of their consumption for the calendar year verified as renewable in accordance with the rules of Fuel Mix Disclosure (FMD); this will see the supply verified by the CRU and SEMO; or
Have Captured Carbon or a similar independent body perform an audit of all their green tariffs in accordance with the rules of Green Source Products Verification (GSPV). This applies where the supply company is less than 100% renewable.
Certificate Key Features
In Ireland, the verification of GO certificates is carried out through the European Energy Certificate System (EECS). Each country in the EECS has a domain protocol. GOs are issued in accordance with the EECS.
Key organizations involved in the FMD and GSPV process include:
AIB (Association of Issuing Bodies)
AIB members include the main European countries. The AIB ensures the integrity of the EECS system across Europe. It facilitates the handling of GOs in line with applicable legislation. SEMO is a member of the AIB.
SEMO (Single Electricity Market Operator)
SEMO is a member of the AIB and is the issuing body for GOs in Ireland. This organization manages the issuance, tracking, and cancellation of GOs, together with the reporting of PSO Attributes, which confirm that renewable electricity has been consumed or allocated. SEMO also administer the GSPV process.
CRU (Commission for Regulation of Utilities)
CRU (Commission for Regulation of Utilities) is the energy regulator in Ireland. The CRU publish reports on both GSPV and Fuel Mix reported by SEMO each year, once it has been completed by SEMO and verify it. The CRU Green Source Products Verification and Fuel Mix Disclosure and CO2 Emissions annual reports are publicly available in the Publications Section of the CRU website www.cru.ie/publications/
These organizations collaborate to ensure that the renewable electricity supply is verified properly and complies with EU regulations. Captured Carbon adhere to these processes in its work with these bodies and can verify adherence of results in its GSPV and FMD reporting for its clients.
Fuel Mix Disclosure Process
The FMD is an annual calendar disclosure period which supply companies must report on to the SEMO and the CRU, this includes Green Attributes including GOs and PSO Attributes. The CRU FMD reporting also reports on the CO2 emissions of electricity supplied by supply companies in Ireland.
Green Source Products Verification Process
The rules around the FMD are ultimately underpinned by the EU regulations Article 3(9) of Directive 2009/72/EC which is the common underpinning regulation across all EU member states.
Regulatory Framework
The GSPV process is governed by the CRU and its paper the Regulation of Green Source Products in the Electricity Retail Market, CER/15/205.
